Medical Facilities Kenya

On 21st March 2003, twin boys (William and David) were born in Kebeneti, Kenya. Their mother died just after giving birth. They were brought to the Bethel Children's Home in Londiani. David was very weak and a short time later died. William is still alive and healthy.

When David died, Lucille Kirui (Manager of the Children's home in Londiani) brought him home to Kebeneti for burial. She saw the conditions in the village, and realised that they had no medical centre, no doctors etc.

The remainder of the Irish money given to Lucille in 2002 was used to rent a building and turn it into a medical centre. This centre is called after David. This building was the start to the clinic project in Kebeneti.

In June 2003, a field was donated and this will be the site of the permanent hospital in Kebeneti. A committee was set up to manage the project - this committee contains members of the Kebeneti community, the Bethel Home, and Friends of Londiani, Ireland

Fundraising began in order to move the rented premises to the permanent site. Firstly money was raised to build the outpatients part of the clinic. The foundations for the outpatients clinic were dug in March 2004, and the building was officially started.

A ceremony was held in Kebeneti. Approximately 1000 people attended the ceremony - including church leaders, community members, teachers and government members.

Medical treatment

Once the outpatients ward was built, the community longer had to rent the medical centre.

The next stage of the plan was to build a women's maternity clinic. Fundraising begun in 2005, and this project was completed in 2007.

Ndubusat Clinic has now employed 8 full time staff, and continues to serve the community in primary health care, and an outreach clinic.

The clinic also has a Voluntary Counselling and Testing Clinic (VCT).

Previously the community would have to travel up to 19km to seek health care.

The clinic has become the centre of the community with many community groups  (Water, Village Health and Lifeskills Peer Education) based there.
