FOL has worked in partnership with the Ministry of Health in Kenya for many years in the Kipkelion District of North West Kenya. FOL supports the roll out of the “Healthy Village” model of development in all villages in the District.
The improvement of maternal and newborn health are the 4th and 5th Millennium Development Goals and FOL in partnership with the Ministry of Health is working to improve maternal and newborn health in the Kipkelion Division. This is done through the provision of courses on Essential Obstetric and Neonatal Care.
FOL has worked together with the local Public Health office in running “Public Health Field Days” throughout the District. Each Field Day is run by the Public Health Officer
in collaboration with community health workers and Friends of Londiani.
The objectives are to provide health education for the public and to improve the primary and secondary
prevention of disease.
During October and November 2009 a team of 31 volunteers travelled to Kenya to complete the following tasks in partnership with the Ministry of Health and local communities:
Medical Education Courses - Essential Obstetric and Newborn Care and Pre-Hospital Trauma and Transfer Courses for Healthcare professionals. (Run by Irish and Kenyan Health Professionals).
Assisted the local Public Health staff with Public Health Field Days in Kamasian and Kasheen.
As part of the Community Health Strategy, Village Health Surveys were completed in 15 villages in the Kamasian Division
Child Assessment Clinics completed in Bethel Children's Home
Link between Londiani District Hospital and Mayo General Hospital facilitated
Medical Elective in Kericho District Hospital
Outreach and Vaccination Clinics completed in Kipkelion District
3 Peer Education courses completed
