Kenyan Update - May 12th, 2008
Londiani town and its surrounding villages have all been affected by conflict in Kenya that arose since the elections on December 27th, 2007.
As a result over 1000 people are living in an internally displaced people's camp in the town. Several of the surrounding villages (Famers, Jambo, Keringet) have also been affected and many people are living in Refugee camps in Jambo Farm, and Kamwingi I. In Kamwingi II there are 350 families living in a camp there in the grounds of the dispensary.
This weekend a major effort was made by the local government in Londiani to encourage all displaced people to return to their homes. The process has begun, and now many people are leaving the camps and either returning to their homelands, or to nearby Molo to be with friends and relatives.
Many people have no homes to return to as they have been burnt out in the crisis. They were given the tents they lived in for the past 4 months and asked to return home. Security has been increased in the area today.
Friends of Londiani will continue to work with our partners on the ground in Londiani in assisting the IDP's in whatever way we can.
