Water
Water
supply and sanitation are a basic human need throughout the world
we live in today. Water is now recognised as a fundamental human
right.
"The human right to water entitles everyone to sufficient,
safe, acceptable, physically accessible and affordable water for
personal and domestic uses"
(World Health Organisation; November 2004)
Contribution to Millennium Development Goals:
- Goal 7 - Environmental Sustainability - This goal aims to reduce by half the proportion of people without sustainable access to safe drinking water. Friends of Londiani are committed to contributing to the achievement of this MDG.
Despite
the absolute necessity for adequate water and sanitation, many people
in the developing world today have no access to it. In the world
today, 1,1 billion people lack access to safe water, and 2,4 billion
lack access to basic sanitation.
Friends
of Londiani began working on water projects in the Summer of 2005.
During the Summer, Harambee 2005 was completed, and this involved
working on two types of water project - water tanks project and
a piped gravity water system.
Friends
of Londiani will continue to help improve water supply in the villages
in which we work.
Water
Pipes Project
This
project is ongoing in the village of Ndubusat. The aim of the water
project is to bring clean running water to several households in the
village. It is a Gravity Water System.
The water piopes are in place, and currently 75 households are benefitting from the system. During 2008 and 2009 the Ndubusat Water Commitee working in partnership with FOL will expand this scheme.
Water
Tanks Project
FOL installs community water tanks in the villages in which we work. To date 48
water tanks have been installed in the villages of LelsothetKapianga, Masita, and Benditai. These are community water tanks and will allow the community
to have clean easily accessible water for many years to come
These
tanks have been a great success, and we are currently fundraising
to install more water tanks in the area.
