Health & Medical

Friends of Londiani is working in partnership with the Ministry of Health, Kenya in a number of areas.

Contribution to Millennium Development Goals:

  • Goal 4 - Reduce Child Mortality
  • Goal 5 - Improve Maternal Health
  • Goal 6 - Combat HIV/AIDS, Malaria and other diseases

Public Health Field Days

The Field Day is a public health exercise.  Public health is concerned with preventive health in the population rather than the healthcare of the individual. The Field Day is run by the Division Public Health Officer in collaboration with Friends of Londiani. The staff of the Public Health Office – Public Health Technicians, Community Health Workers - mobilise the community and run the Field Day with volunteers.

The objectives are to provide health education and primary prevention of disease. A number of stations are set up in the field and the attendees rotate through each one. The Stations provided reflect Kenyan Health Policy priorities.

The usual stations are Malaria, Nutrition with Vitamin A supplementation, TB, HIV/AIDS with VCT, Hygiene (Water, Sanitation, De-worming), Maternal and Child Health, Dental Health.

Vulnerable groups i.e. children under 5 years and pregnant women receive individual review – the children are screened for malnutrition; the pregnant women receive antenatal care and advice to deliver in a health facility.

The statistics for each Field Day are returned to the District Public Health Office for review.

Essential Obstetric Education

The improvement of maternal health is the 5th Millenium Development Goal, and FOL in partnership with the Ministry of Health is working to improve maternal health in the Kipkelion Division. This is done through the provision of courses on essential obstetric care. Courses are provided for

  1. Community Women’s Groups at Peer Education level
  2. Traditional Birth Atttendants and Community Health Workers through local PHO
  3. Professional Groups – Doctors, Midwives, Nurses, Clinical Officers
  4. A Situational Analysis of Birth-Preparedness in a rural area in Kenya

Ndubusat Bethel Medical Clinc

Ndubusat Bethel Medical Clinic is currently funded by Friends of Londiani. The hospital has 6 wards with 18 beds, and this building was completed during Harambee '07. The medical centre is an outpatients centre and was opened in 2004.

Friends of Londiani support the medical team (3 Community Nurses Lab Technician, Nurse's Aid) who work there, and the project has the support of the Kenyan Ministry of Health.

During Harambee 2007 a medical team from Ireland traveled to Ndubusat to work with the Kenyan staff. The Friends of Londiani Medical Training Project specifically addressed the implementation of “Safe Motherhood” in the Ndubusat catchment area, which encompasses the following interventions:

  • Family and Pregnancy Planning
  • Antenatal Care
  • Prevention of Vertical Transmission of HIV
  • Post-abortion care
  • Clean Delivery
  • Essential Obstetric Care
  • Essential Neonatal Care
  • Postpartum Care

Training modules were run for the hospital staff and for Traditional Birth Attendants and Community Health Workers.

History of Ndubusat Bethel Medical Clinic

HIV Peer Education Lifeskills Courses

The Peer Education project is a HIV/AIDS Education Programme. It was originally developed by USAID working with the Kenyan Girl Guides and Family Health International.Modules included values, relationships, sexuality gender, adolescence and HIV/AIDS.

The concept behind this type of programme is that the participants learn, and then pass on the knowledge to their peers. It has been run in Londiani since 2002 when the first FOL Irish service team travelled there. Since then the project has grown from strength to strength. Now it is run by FOL Kenya, and many of the original participants are now trainers in HIV/AIDS.

Healthy Village

The Healthy Village Policy was developed by the Ministry of Health in Kenya. The aim is to enable all households to become healthy places to live. FOL is working with the Ministry of Health and its Village Health Commitees to implement this in the villages in which we work. The aim is to develop the following for each household/homestead:

  • Clean Water
  • Nutritional Kitchen Garden
  • VIP Latrines
  • Clean compound
  • Well ventilated kitchens and living areas
  • Proper disposal of refuse an and re-cycling
  • Income Generating Projects
